At first you thought
you'd went blind at
some point between
sleeping and waking,
because when you
opened your eyes,
you saw nothing.
Then you thought you
were still dreaming,
because you were
floating endlessly
in a dark abyss, but
in your dreams, you
never have that clunky
suit on. Now you've
narrowed it down to
two options: you're
either in far, far
under the sea, or in
deep space.

You try to maneuver
yourself around,
searching for light
or resistance, but
your helmet obscures
your sightline and your
metal gloves have...
limited dexterity.
Still, you're not in
any hurry to get the
thing off, considering
the current conditions.
It's hard to focus anyway,
the environment is
fucking with your head.
Absolute darkness,
absolute silence,
it's something that no
human was meant to
withstand.

Are you human,
you ask yourself, trying
to avert your eyes from
the overwhelming nothing,
trying to tap against
the glass of your
visor, but still hearing
nothing. How did you
get here? Were you a
scientist? A criminal?
 It's probably just the
pressure or lack of
gravity that's messing
you up like this.
It's nothing, you affirm,
arching your back and
ignoring the icy spears
of panic starting to
prod at you. It doesn't
matter if you're human
or not, no creature
could possibly evolve
in such a desolate place.
Suddenly, a wave of
some kind of emotion
hits you, and you shiver.
You're not meant to
be here. Nothing is meant
to be here. This is a
place where only nothing
can survive, and you are
something, and either
you will become nothing
or the entirety of the
nothing will become
anything.

And anyone could tell
who'd win that fight.

Nothing you can't get
through, it's not like
you got stabbed or
something. Gathering
your resolve, and perhaps
your willful ignorance,
you make a pact with
yourself to endure,
no matter how badly
you or nothing might
wish/not wish
otherwise. History is
full of people winning
by just ignoring
what they don't
understand. Your own
ability to keep a job
has been predicated
on your ability to
not ask questions.
Your own ability to
think rationally
right now is entirely
based in not freaking
out over the gaps in
your personhood, or the
gaps in the world,
or the possible gaps
between the panels of
your suit. It's fine,
it's fine.

Drifting, like a
dead fish or an
orbitless asteroid,
you don't know what
scares you more:
the absolute lack
of any rocky wall,
floating debris,
or bioluminescent
animal, or the fact
that you can't see
a single star.
